✞ The loss of Fidel Castro today reminds us, that days come when peoples are mourning for their lost revolutionary leaders who overthrew old dictatorships to bring about new ones. The indigenous people of Hellas have faced similar mournings for their own revolutionary leaders of successful conservative revolutions. Many of our radical compatriots have experienced intense melancholy since and have never managed to work through that loss. Today, Dokoumena together with #documenta14 wish to support these radical compatriots of ours. ✞

Playing with symbols of greek national pride and displays of queerness, the handbook to the lore and wisdom of the queer indigenous opts for a direct and intentionally puerile approach to expressing exasperation with certain strata of contemporary Greek society - certain subsets of the indigenous population, if you will - which regularly indulge in various over-the-top rituals of ancestor-worship and pathetic displays of machismo. In addition, the crass imagery is meant to dispel any misconceptions an outside observer might have with regards to the current state of the "cradle of western civilisation" and help them reconsider how heavily they want to borrow its symbols and values.

AMAN AMAN

“AMAN AMAN” documents the working of a gang of girls who migrated from Greece, Cyprus & Afghanistan to London. They are a fictional modern, sexually liberated neo-nationalistic group with this song being their national anthem and the Red Greek flag as their banner. The girls like to think of themselves as heroines, others could say they are delusional. The song is red as a manifesto, a hedonistic protest, a Greek punk prayer; it directly confronts and ridicules nationalistic political parties, such as the “Golden Dawn”. |

"Oxi", the historical word of negation that etymologically arises from the Proto-Indo-European *uksḗn, which means bull; from the greek revolution of 1821 to the European referendum of 2015, this word has united hellenic revolutionaries all over the world.

The intervention is a simple message written on a big piece of paper with water colours that reads “INDIGENOUS NON-GREEK AND NOT FREE IN THE LAND OF ELEFTHERIA PLEASE REMEMBER ME”. The message refers firstly to documenta14's idea of greeks as the only indigenous people in Greece, ignoring the existence of other ethnic groups that are consistently left out of the official history of the greek state and their existence and culture has not been recognised. Secondly, it referes to the notion of “eleftheria” (greek for freedom) that is employed by documenta 14 as a higher and more pure idea, as opposed to the “western idea of freedom”. Given the ill treatment of the ethnic minorities in the land of eleftheria (and not freedom) that distinction achieves nothing but to raise the nationalist sentiment of greeks.
